Dancer = YES, Model = YES

“R” is one of my ballet students. She’s a hard worker like my other students. They’re doing good at school and always share the joy inside the dance classes.

One thing which makes her different, she’s also a model for this last year. She’s joining one of the biggest model agencies in Holland “Paparazzi Models” management based in Amsterdam. Doutzen Kroes (a Dutch international model, Victoria Secret’s angel etc) is also one of models from this model management.

After she has a photo shoots she will let me and her ballet classmates know, sometimes she will show me the photo results as well and every time I’m surprised with the results. She’s just totally different. She becomes someone else. Really amazing to see how she transformed.

She has appeared in Dutch “Glamour”, “ELLE”. Quite big for a teenage girl who just started her career in modelling.

This photo of her is her first commercial advertisement and we all are so proud of her.

What I love about her, “R” stays down to earth with the fact that she’s “not just a teenager”. She stays the same. Always gives her best inside her ballet classes, no matter if she’s tired from school or even when she’s not really in a good mood :)

I think its a good and important quality for someone to have. This is my motto: No matter how good you are, no matter how success you are, just stay down to earth cause being arrogant will lead you to nowhere.

I believe “R” will have her loooooong carreer in modelling, so I think I just have to enjoy my time with her and my other ballet students as long as I can.

My students, despite their differences in backgrounds and characters ,they all have their ‘special’ moments for me. They are unique individuals exploring their talents, capabilities and boundaries. Keep it up girls! I’m proud of all of you.

Xoxo

A very good documentary about POB

Dancers are a great breed of people. And they really want to dance so you don’t have to beg them to work. However, dancers sometimes build walls around themselves because they are presenting themselves all the time: dancing is very much a confession.

Comfort Zone

Ballet….is been my life since I was 6 years old (I’m 33 now). I had my ups and downs inside this dance world but I never wanted to let ‘it’ go.

Ballet is my world and I think it will be always my world.

I should say I learned the most at my ballet school in Jakarta, my home country. I was there since I was 6 until my 27th of age. From a young elementary student until I had my own classes to teach. I learned modern, jazz and Indonesian traditional dance as well…not only learned them but also danced on stage in those styles. But I always feel comfortable with ballet instead with the other dance styles. I feel like I’m home. I feel safe.

Last January. I saw a performance (view of the dancers are my ballet students). They did a piece in a dance theater style. Sara was the choreographer. She’s German and really in love with Pina Bausch * (the pioneer of the dance theater, and yes, she’s also a German).

I stopped with self-dancing since 2007. I wanted to teach 100%. But when I saw Sara’s piece I was surprisingly in love with the energy and the non-ballet they did. When I heard that she’s going to make a new dance theater piece for another school performance in June I wanted to join the group immediately.

I knew what I want, but I asked my partner in life about it as well. I just wanted to know what his opinion would be. He said, “If you want to do it, and then do it. If you want to explore other things than you should do it.” The day after I came to asked Sara if she accidentally needed an extra dancer for her next piece. And yes, now I’m one of her 7 dancers.

Her choreography is far far away from my world (read: ballet). Its more exploring new things, working with what inside your mind/head, and dare to move outside the normal ballet terms.

I learn to let myself go… Learn to let myself free from all the ballet rules. I dared myself to be out of my comfort zone. Sara helps me… And I should say, she’s one of 3 choreographers who are able to make me feel comfort outside my comfort zone.

Thank you Sara.

PS. I took photos from one of our rehearsals. You can see that it’s beyond my comfort zone :)
